World Toilet Day 2021: Today is World Toilet Day, know this year's theme and its history

World Toilet Day 2021: People living in big cities and towns cannot even imagine life without permanent toilets. But there is also a truth that even today 3.6 billion people of the world do not have toilets. Do you know that compromise with cleanliness can wreak havoc on large sections of the society with serious diseases by contaminating our food and water, people can die. World Toilet Day is celebrated every year on 19 November to bring awareness about the importance of toilet and cleanliness in our lives. Jack Sim from Singapore, who founded an NGO World Toilet Organization in the year 2001, started World Toilet Day as a definite initiative. It was his idea that this day should be used to increase awareness among the people about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. His initiative was supported by the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA). In 2010, the United Nations recognized the Human Right to Water and Sanitation (HRWS) as a fundamental human right.

After this, on 24 July 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution in its 67th session, by which 19 November was recognized as World Toilet Day. Simultaneously, it acknowledged the unsatisfactory progress made in providing basic sanitation services to all, and recognized how this deficiency had a negative impact on people’s health, their economic and social status. This resolution was adopted by 122 member countries.

UNGA’s request
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) also highlighted the negative effects of inadequate sanitation on water resources and our environment. The international organization also urged all its member countries to eliminate open defecation, promote the importance of sanitation and sewage treatment to the people.

The objective of World Toilet Day is to create awareness and spread awareness about ideal sanitary practices that promote women’s health and safety. The day is also used to stop people from defecating in the open, as it is a health hazard, as well as making women and girls vulnerable to attacks.

World Toilet Day 2021 theme
The theme of this year’s World Toilet Day is ‘Valuing Toilets’. Through this theme, a message has been given to emphasize the absolute need of toilets in our life.
