Recently, a case of brutal beating of a Dalit man in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh has gained momentum. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has taken cognizance of the incident. He has issued a notice to the state government. Under this, he has been asked to give a report about the action taken so far in the matter.
The commission has taken this step after watching a video of the incident on Twitter. In the video, a Dalit man can be seen purportedly tied to a tree and beaten up on behalf of the family members of a woman. This man had a love affair with a woman.
The incident happened on July 7. But, two days later, the matter came to light after the video surfaced on social media. Sampla said, “This is a very shameful, ruthless, inhuman and unforgivable act.”
He said, “As the President of NCSC, I am duty bound to protect the rights of the Scheduled Caste people and to provide them justice in all respects.”
Sampla cautioned that if the action report is not submitted within the stipulated time, the Commission may, in exercise of the powers conferred under Article 338 of the Constitution, issue summons to the officers to appear before it in person in Delhi.
