Former Team India opener Aakash Chopra says that even though Ajinkya Rahane has been made the captain in the first Test against New Zealand, the difficulties have not eased for him. Chopra says that Rahane is on a very slippery road. He says that there has been a lack of consistency in Rahane’s performance.

33-year-old Rahane will captain the Indian team in the absence of Virat Kohli in the Kanpur Test (India vs New Zealand Kanpur Test). Kohli will return for the second Test in Mumbai.

Chopra talked on his YouTube channel on the issue of how important the New Zealand series is for Rahane. He said that Rahane is undoubtedly a good captain, but he has to perform effectively with the bat as well.

He said, ‘This is a very important series for them. He is the captain for the first Test but in my view he is on a very smooth road. No doubt he is a very good captain. He was the captain when India won the series in Australia. He also scored a century in Melbourne. However, the numbers have come down after that. He has played a couple of good innings but he hasn’t played a very good series. This has been the pattern of his entire career.

Chopra further said that Rahane has played close to 70 Test matches but he does not have a big series yet. This is a very worrying thing.

He said, ‘After playing more than 70 Test matches, questions are being raised about his place in the team. While he is the vice-captain of the team. The biggest problem is the lack of consistency in their performance. In the Australia series too, apart from a century, there were no major scores. He played just one good innings in the home series against England as well. Even when the Indian team went to England, the story was similar. There he hit a half-century at Lord’s. There is not one Test series in which he has scored 500 runs. Whereas it should have happened by now.

Rahane’s form in England was very poor. He scored 109 runs in 77 innings during the tour earlier this year. His batting average was 15.57.
