IPL’s last two matches to be held at the same time, new teams announced on October 25


The governing committee of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday decided that the last two matches of the league phase will start at the same time at 7.30 pm (Indian time). Usually one match of double header (two matches in a day) is played in the afternoon and the other in the evening. According to the rules till now, the afternoon match starts at 3:30 pm Indian time while the second match is played from 7.30 pm. Both the matches will be played together in the evening to prevent unfair advantage of either team.

“For the first time in the history of IPL, the last two league matches before the ‘IPL 2021’ playoff will be played together,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a release. According to the schedule, in one of the last two matches, Sunrisers Hyderabad will face Mumbai Indians and in the other, Royal Challengers Bangalore will face Delhi Capitals.

“Instead of having one afternoon match and one evening match on the last day (08.10.2021) of the league phase of the current season, both the matches will be played simultaneously from 7.30 pm (Indian time),” he said.

The two new teams to be included in the IPL will be announced on October 25, after which the media rights tender for the 2023 to 2027 season will be floated. It is understood that existing rights holders ‘Sony’ and ‘Zee’, which recently merged with Star Sports, will also bid with a huge amount.
