When the ‘King of the Grasscourt’ Roger Federer entered the quarter-finals at the All England Club, his dream was to get even closer to winning the 21st Grand Slam, but he suffered a surprise defeat against Poland’s Hubert Hurkaz. The crowd’s greetings at the historic All England Club after the loss sounded like farewell and the eight-time champion has admitted he does not know if he will be able to play the next Wimbledon.
Hubert Hurkaz comes from an athletic family. His mother Jofia Maliszewska Hurkaj was a junior tennis champion in Poland. Both his uncles were tennis players and his grandfather was a volleyball player at the international level. Interestingly, Hurkaz’s younger sister Nika is also a tennis player. In this way, tennis love is a family gift in him.
Growing up watching your hero Federer
He started playing tennis at the age of 5. She became interested in professional tennis while watching Roger Federer on TV. In his early years, he was taught the skills of tennis by Philippe Kanzula. He pursued a career in 2019 with Craig Boynton, who has also coached John Isner and Sam Querrey. In this way, he has reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time after defeating Federer.
First Polish tennis star to do so
He is the first Polish player to win the ATP Masters 1000 singles title which he won at the Miami Open earlier this year. In total, he has won three ATP singles titles, including Delray Beach (2021) and Winston-Salem (2019). Not only this, he has defeated world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Such was the thrill of the quarter finals
Federer was defeated 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 by Hubert Hurkaz of Pollau, seeded 14. Federer’s departure for the 22nd time in the tournament ended in a surprise one-sided defeat. This was not the Federer that tennis lovers around the world are used to seeing. He has played just eight matches since the knee operation last year. Federer, who was going to celebrate his 40th birthday exactly a month later, did not get the strokes from the racket that made him a 20-time Grand Slam champion.
Federer lost a set 6-0 for the third time in his 429 Grand Slam match. Earlier this happened both the times at the French Open. On the other hand, Hurkaz, who considers Federer as his role model, said that he did not imagine the outcome.
