The Indian cricket team has suffered a major setback before the tour of South Africa. Veteran opener Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the 3-match Test series due to injury. Gujarat opener Priyank Panchal has been included in the Indian Test squad in place of Rohit.
‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma suffered this injury during a training session in Mumbai on Sunday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed about Rohit’s injury by tweeting from its official Twitter handle. Rohit has a left hamstring injury.
Rohit was recently made the vice-captain of the Test team. He was given this responsibility in place of Ajinkya Rahane. This year Rohit’s record in Test cricket has been excellent. As an opener, 34-year-old Rohit is the highest run-scorer in Test cricket in the year 2021. He has scored 906 runs in 11 Test matches at an average of 47.68 including 2 centuries and 4 half-centuries.
Priyank played an innings of 96 runs on the tour of South Africa
31-year-old Priyank Panchal had scored 120 runs at an average of 40 in three unofficial Test innings while playing for India A on the recent tour of South Africa. During this his best score was 96 runs.
Triple century in domestic cricket
Right-handed batsman Priyank has scored 7011 runs in 100 first-class matches with 24 centuries and 25 half-centuries. His average during this period has been 45.52. Priyank, who recently captained the India A team on the South Africa tour, has had a stellar domestic career.
Priyank’s best score in domestic cricket is 314 not out, which he scored against Punjab. In 75 List A matches, Priyank has scored 2854 runs at an average of 40.19 including 5 centuries and 18 fifties.
The tour will start with the Boxing Day Test
The tour will begin with the Boxing Day Test. The first Test match will be played from 26 December which was earlier to be held from 17 December. The first test match of the series will be played at Centurion’s SuperSport Park, while the second and third test matches will be played at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The second Test match of the series will be played from 3 to 7 January 2022, while the third and last Test will be held from 11 to 15 January.
