Russia has started the delivery of the S-400 missile system to India. Since then, the threat of US sanctions on India has also increased. What is CAATSA Act?
CAATSA stands for Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. America made it as a punitive act to protest against its rivals. This law was first enacted on 2 August 2017. After which it was implemented in January 2018. The purpose of this law is to counter the aggression of America’s enemy countries Iran, Russia and North Korea.
Which countries can the US impose sanctions on?
The CATSA Act gives the President of the United States the power to impose at least 5 of the 12 on individuals and countries associated with the military and intelligence sectors from these countries. The President of America can impose export restrictions on the country concerned. Due to this, that country may have to face sanctions related to US defense and trade. Not only this, America can stop the export of nuclear related items to such countries.
India may be exempted from sanctions
The demand for exempting India from CATSA laws has been raised many times in the US Parliament. The Obama administration, the Trump administration and the Biden administration have also shown a soft stance towards India regarding these sanctions. In 2018, during the joint conference of the US Senate and the House Armed Services Committee, there was talk about exempting India from CATSA laws. During this it was said that the US will amend section 231 of CAATSA of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) – 2019.
What is the harm to America by sanctions on India?
