Taiwan has intensified the training of its army amid the threat of a looming attack from China. Indeed, China’s military PLA has completed its ambitious military modernization. Not only this, in the white paper issued by the Ministry of Defense of Taiwan, it has been said that the Chinese army has the ability to blockade major airports and seaports. At the same time, the US Defense Ministry says that China has the capacity to force Taiwan’s leadership to sit at the negotiating table by the year 2027.
Since assuming power in 2016, President Tsai Ing Wen has put full emphasis on increasing the strength of the Taiwanese military. Taiwan has bought weapons from the US on a large scale because their relations with China have deteriorated. US President Joe Biden has given his assent to weapons worth $750 million. Earlier, Donald Trump allowed the sale of weapons worth $ 5.1 billion in the year 2020.
Completion of national service required for all male citizens
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry is now asking for an additional $ 9 billion to increase defense capability, which should be given to it in 5 years. This money is in addition to his current defense budget. Amidst the danger looming over Taiwan’s future, the question is now arising whether the general public will be ready for it. Taiwan has made it mandatory for all male citizens to complete national service. In reality this means that they should be ready to fight together with the army.
Taiwan’s troops currently number 188,000 and could rise to 215,000 if civilian contractors and trainees were combined. Since Taiwan cannot put more troops on alert mode, the emphasis is now on building up the reserve. These reserve Taiwanese soldiers will be able to repair runways, repair vehicles and do trench digging in case of bombardment from China. In the event of an attack, close to 10 lakh reserve soldiers can be called in the first round. However, many military experts are questioning this strategy and saying that these reserves will not be efficient for fighting wars.
