After the formation of the new government under the leadership of Sher Bahadur Deuba in Nepal, good relations with India were being expected. During the tenure of the previous Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, the relations between India and Nepal reached a critical point on many issues including the border. But, now the Deuba government has also resumed talks on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with China following the path of Oli.
China wants to trap poor countries in debt trap
The Belt and Road Initiative is an ambitious plan of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Through this, China plans to connect Asia with Africa and Europe by land and sea. However, China is making poor countries its economic slaves by giving huge amounts of loans to the poor countries behind this project. In Asia, Sri Lanka and Laos are the biggest victims of China’s BRI project.
Nepal had signed in 2017
According to the report of Kathmandu Post, not a single project sanctioned through BRI project in Nepal has started yet. Nepal and China signed the Belt and Road Initiative in 2017. According to several government officials in Nepal, now the exchange of draft implementation plans with both sides, negotiations on projects and their commencement under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) are expected.
Nepal’s Deuba government resumed talks
The report states that according to at least three officials working on the draft, Nepal’s foreign ministry has taken the initiative to start the project at the earliest. Whereas, other agencies like the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Finance are providing inputs. Kali Prasad Pokharel, who served for more than three years as the head of the North East Asia Division in the Nepalese foreign ministry, said China had sought a plan of action from the government so that it could start work at the earliest.
Nepal had not yet given approval because of India
When Nepal signed the BRI agreement in 2017, it was seen as a pivotal moment in Nepal-China relations. But questions were also raised on the reasons for not starting a single project under the Chinese programme. It is said that due to the geopolitical situation, the Government of Nepal had shown reluctance against this project of China so far. Nepal was still reluctant to approve the project due to the anger of India and America.
The deal was signed during Prachanda’s PM
At the time of signing of the BRI agreement, Pushpa Kamal Dahal of the Communist Party (Maoist Centre) in Nepal was the prime minister. After him, Sher Bahadur Deuba of Nepali Congress headed the government. He was followed by KP Sharma Oli of CPN-UML as the Prime Minister. Now once again Deuba has become the Prime Minister of Nepal and Prachanda is also included in his government. In such a situation, once again the BRI seems to be gaining momentum.
What is the harm to India from BRI
India’s five neighboring countries are part of China’s BRI project. These include Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. In these countries, China is developing infrastructure with its own money. In such a situation, the amount of Chinese debt on these countries is increasing day by day. Not only this, due to accelerating the flow of money, China’s interference in the diplomacy of these countries is also increasing. In such a situation, the threat to India is also increasing.
