Now another country has raised its voice against the self-declared rules and regulations of the social media platform Twitter. European country Serbia’s President Alexander Vucic has challenged Twitter, saying that if he has the courage, he should show his account by banning it like Donald Trump. He said that due to this protest, he can become another Trump in the world. Twitter suspended the account of then US President Donald Trump over the attack on the US Capitol on January 6 this year.
Due to this there was a ruckus about Twitter
Indeed, Twitter has in recent days labeled most of Serbia’s media as state-backed media. The President of Serbia is irritated about this. They claim that the country’s media is free and they are not given any funds from the government. In such a situation, Twitter is giving state-related media status to media institutions to deliberately harass.
Twitter is telling the media to be official
Twitter began associating media institutions with “state-affiliated” media labels in August, ahead of the November 2020 US presidential elections. The company said at the time that its purpose was to limit the spread of potentially harmful and misleading content. Twitter grants state-related media status to media institutions over which the country monitors editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressure, or control over production and distribution.
Twitter told these media institutions of Serbia that the government
Twitter described Serbia’s daily newspapers Srpski Telegraph, Kurir, Informer, Politika, three free-to-air channels – Happy, Prava TV and B92, as well as the news agency Tanjug as state media. In addition, Serbia’s public broadcaster, Serbia’s Radio Television, RTS, and Vojvodina’s radio television, RTV, have also been granted state-affiliated media status.
President Vucic said – I am the next Trump
President Vucic said that I can’t wait for them (Twitter) to ban my account, so I can be another Trump in the world. The Serbian media has also lashed out on Twitter. Tabloid Informer gave the headline that ‘Twitter is the propaganda machine of war’. This tabloid has replaced Twitter’s Blue Bird logo with Hitler’s picture on its front page.
Who is doing the censorship?
Vucic, chief of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), said that we as a state do not even fund most of these outlets. But they fund the Voice of America and the BBC, and are not labeled state media. Which makes me wonder who is doing the censorship here. Vucic also congratulated all the media that Twitter has described as official. He said he was spreading freedom-loving ideas.
