- Ceremony held in Karachi, Pakistan, Pak Navy Chief attended
Turkey has started the construction work of the fourth warship for the Pakistani Navy under the MILGEM Project. The ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the warship was held in Karachi, the largest base of the Pakistani Navy. The Chief of the Pakistani Navy, Admiral Amjad Khan Niazi also attended the ceremony. The warship is being built jointly by Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) and Turkish state defense company ASFAT.
Chief of Pakistan Navy boasts
Addressing the ceremony on the occasion, Admiral Niazi said that the construction of indigenous modern warships with the help of Turkey is a proud moment for Pakistan. He said that this joint venture will open new avenues of cooperation between Ankara and Islamabad in the field of defense production. The Pakistani Navy has issued a statement claiming that the induction of the MILGEM-class ships will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Pakistani Navy.
Pakistan had signed agreement in 2018
In 2018, the Pakistan Military of Technology (TOT) with Turkish state-owned defense contractor firm ASFAT Inc. had signed an agreement for four Ada class warships under the Milgam project. As per the plan, two of these were to be built in Turkey and the other two would be built in Pakistan at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works-Special Shipbuilding Division of the Pakistan Navy. It also includes technology transfer.
How powerful is this Turkish Corvette
Turkey initially built the middle-class Ada-class corvette for its navy. Later in the deal with Pakistan, two of these are being made in Karachi. Multipurpose corvettes and frigates are being built through the Ada class project. This warship can carry out missions like reconnaissance, surveillance, early warning, anti-submarine warfare. It also deploys surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles. Turkey is also building four Jinnah-class frigates for the Pakistan Navy as part of the project.
How big a threat this warship is for India?
These warships built on the given technology of Turkey are not a special threat to India. Because, these Ada class warships are considered to be of medium class. It will also be very easy for India to catch them on the radar. The Indian Navy already has destroyers and submarines capable of destroying this Turkish corvette. The P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and other surveillance radars included in the Indian Navy can keep a close watch on this warship.
